Explore An Cheathrú Rua

On the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht, 50 km west of Galway city lies An Cheathrú Rua. With a population of 2,500 on the peninsula, historically, settlement was mainly along the coast where people made their living. This is still true today for some people living in Carraroe, where the largest number of traditional boats which are widely known as the Galway Hooker, curraghs and other types of boats. Féile an Dóilín is a traditional boat festival and treats the onlooker to wonderful sights of the big sails of hookers(namely gleoiteog, púcán, leathbhád and bád mór) and curraghs lighting up Cuan an Fhir Mhóir(Bay of the big man) at the beginning of August. Cuan an Fhir Mhóir(the bay of the big man) was named after a giant guarding the bay but today the bay is used by friendly, endearing people. In the mouth of the bay, lies Trá an Dóilín, one of the few coral beaches of Ireland.

Tá an Cheathrú Rua lonnaithe i gcroílár Ghaeltacht Chonamara i mbéal an Atlantaigh agus an tsráidbhaile 50km as cathair na Gaillimhe. Tá 2,500 duine ag cur fúthu ar an leithinis seo.
