Explore An Fhairche

In the heart of Joyce’s Country, An Fhairche (meaning “the Green”), or Clonbur in English, is a Gaeltacht Village in County Galway.

Its position between two major lakes, Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, makes it an ideal centre for trout anglers.

For the more adventurous, Mount Gable (1370 feet) lies only 2 km west of the village and offers an easy climb with beautiful views of the nearby lakes and the Connemara mountains.

According to Irish mythology, the hordes of Fir Bolg gathered on the top of this hill before their confrontation with Tuatha Dé Danann, at the Battle of Moytura.

The village contains the ruins of the Petersburgh Estate, once owned by the Lynch family and then, in more recent times, owned by the Guinness family. Part of the property was then donated to the State and is now an outdoor education centre.
