What’s On This June – Imeachtaí Mí Meitheamh
June brings a wonderful mix of music, festivals, exhibitions, outdoor activities and island traditions across Connemara and the Aran Islands. From concerts in An Spidéal and celebrations on the Aran Islands to cycling events, local markets and art exhibitions, there are plenty of opportunities to experience the region during the early summer season. Festivals and Events – Féilte agus Imeachtaí
The festival season gets underway with Clifden Summer Fest from 12–14 June, bringing music, entertainment and a lively atmosphere to the town. Adventure enthusiasts can take on the Gaelforce West Adventure Race on 13 June, while cyclists can test themselves on the Corr na Móna 50 Mile Cycle the same day.
Beidh Rásaí na mBád agus na gCurrachaí ag tósu an M
Traditional maritime heritage is celebrated during Féile na mBád Ros Muc on 13–14 June and on Inis Mór, the annual Pátrún takes place on 27–28 June, continuing a long-standing island tradition. The month closes with the internationally renowned Craiceann Bodhrán Summer School on Inis Oírr, running from 29 June to 3 July.
Other community celebrations include Feasta Sráide Maigh Cuilinn on 13 June and the 40th anniversary celebrations of Ceardlann An Spidéal on 20–21 June.
Music -Ceol
Music features strongly throughout the month, beginning with The Irish Harp at Kylemore Abbey on 1 June, when Caitríona Moskovskova performs in the beautiful surroundings of Fordham Hall.
Ceolchoirm den scótha ar siúl i Stiúideo Cuan. Féasta Ceoil An Spidéil returns with a series of performances at Stiúideo Cuan. Roesy takes to the stage on 12 June, followed by Lisa Hannigan on 18 June, David Keenan on 19 June and Colm Mac Con Iomaire on 20 June. Ceolchoirm den scótha ar siúl i Stiúideo Cuan.
Arts, Heritage and Culture- Ealaín,Oidhreacht agus Cultúr
A number of exhibitions are running throughout June and beyond.
At Ionad na Feamainne, Toibreacha Beannaithe Chonamara Theas explores the stories and traditions associated with the holy wells of Conamara Theas. On Inis Meáin, Jo Killalea’s exhibition Mí an Mhárta continues until 30 September, while Toibreacha Beannaithe Árann examines the sacred wells and spiritual heritage of the Aran Islands.
At Kylemore Abbey, visitors can experience In Harmony with Nature in Fordham Hall, while Beautiful Connemara by Phil Taylor is on display at Connemara National Park throughout June.
The uachtarARTS Annual Exhibition, Ár dTeanga, Ár nDúchas, runs from 12–28 June at Oughterard Courthouse, celebrating language, heritage and place through contemporary art.
Roundstone History Tours take place on 3, 10, 17 and 24 June, offering an opportunity to discover the stories, characters and history of one of Connemara’s best-loved villages. Visitors can also call to Bernie Dignam’s studio in Letterfrack throughout the summer.
Outdoors -Amuigh faoin Aer
For those looking to get active, ParkRuns take place every Saturday in Clonbur, Oughterard and Inis Meáin, welcoming walkers, joggers and runners of all abilities.
The Croí Charity Cycle takes place on 7 June, raising funds for Croí. Midsummer Nature Day at Brigit’s Garden on 21 June celebrates the summer solstice with nature-inspired activities and experiences.
Island Life –Saol Oileáin
June offers several opportunities to experience life on the Aran Islands. A special open day at the lighthouse on Inis Oírr takes place on 6 June.
Rivers on Aran runs from 16–18 June, bringing together discussions, events and activities inspired by island landscapes and culture. From 1935 to 1943, Modernist artist, Elizabeth Joyce Rivers lived and created art in the Man of Aran Cottage. ‘Rivers on Aran’ is a three-day interdisciplinary celebration of the influence of the Aran Islands on her work and life.
Alongside the exhibitions, festivals and music events taking place across the islands, these gatherings offer a unique insight into the traditions and communities that continue to shape island life today.
Markets and Community
The Roundstone Country Market takes place every Sunday throughout June, July and August. Featuring local crafts, produce, baking and artisan goods, it is a great way to meet local makers and experience the community spirit of Connemara.
