Medieval Mysteries Thursday, 21st August at 2:00 PM at Oughterard Graveyard and Medieval Church, Co. Galway
Medieval Mysteries, a special Heritage Week event at the historic Oughterard Graveyard and Medieval Church, Co. Galway. This early Christian site is believed to have been built on an even older pre-Christian sacred location, reflecting a deep continuity of spiritual tradition in the area. Many of the beliefs and customs of the early church were shaped by, and incorporated, earlier pagan traditions—offering a fascinating glimpse into Ireland’s layered religious history.
We are delighted to welcome Chris Southgate, Conservation Engineer and Director of Southgate Associates, as our guest speaker. Chris will discuss the importance of the early church in the community, its central role in shaping local life, and the significance of preserving such heritage sites today. Chris will discuss the conservation of the Medieval Church but also the cultural, historical, social, and religious importance of these structures in the past and also in these modern changing times.
The talk will be held in the Oughterard Graveyard located at :
