Dún Dúnchathair Inis Mór

Dún Dúchathair on Inis Mór

Dún Dúchathair on Inis Mór  is known as  ‘the black fort’,  because of the dark colour of the limestone is another fort on the island.

This fort is located on the high cliffs along the southern side of Inis Mór.  It was probably constructed in the Iron Age or early
medieval period (500 B.C. – A.D. 800). The original entrances were located at either end of the wall but these have been demolished by erosoion.  The massive dry-stone wall  is 7.2m thick in places. The wall is defended on the outside by cheveaux de frise.

The Western Stone Fort Project examined in detail a group of large stone forts and there is a description about the Dún Dúchathair and other forts on Oileáin Arann.

Extreme care is needed when visiting the fort. Strong walking shoes are recommended and please heed the advice on the Heritage Ireland site.

Tugtar ‘An Dún Dubh’ ar  Dún Dúchathair ar Inis Mór mar gheall ar dhath dorcha na aolchloiche.

Tá an dún seo suite ar na haille ar an taobh theas d’Inis Mór. Is dócha gur tógadh é sa Ré Iarann nó go luath sa tréimhse mheánaoiseach (500 R.C. – A.D. 800). Bhí na bealaí isteach ar an dá cheann den balla ach tá siad scriosta anois de bharr creimeadh. Tá an balla ollmhór cloch thirim 7.2m ar tiús in áiteanna. Tá “cheveaux de frise” taobh amuigh mar chósaint ar an dún.

Rinne an Western Stone Forts Projects  taighde ar an dún mar pháirt den tógra agus tá cur síos ann ar Dhún Dúchathair agus dúnta eile ar Oileáin Árann.

Moltar aire a thabhairt mar gheall ar an talamh/cosán garbh. Moltar bróga láidre siúil a chaitheamh an chomhairle ar shuíomh Heritage Ireland a leanúint.
