More than 60 years have passed since Irish-American director John Ford shot his classic movie The Quiet Man in Ireland. But interest in the movie has never been stronger. John Ford’s beloved romantic comedy The Quiet Man has been both reviled and celebrated for its larger-than-life portrayal of the Emerald Isle. The famous Quiet Man Bridge is located just before the town of Oughterard, (less the 10 minutes from Peacockes). The still-intact bridge was where Wayne’s character sat and heard about the White O’Morn Cottage. In the film the cottage has been neglected, and Quiet Man fans have removed stones as memories. However, there is a replica of the cottage right beside Peacockes Hotel.
Further details on the history of Lough Corrib and Ashford Castle are many of the locations used for Castletown and Innisfree in the film. At the top of the village is Pat Cohan’s bar – one of the most photographed of all the Quiet Man rentals. In fact, the property was never published and the interior shots were done in Hollywood.
