Kylemore Abbey & Gardens

Nestled in the heart of Connemara, Kylemore Abbey & Gardens is a vibrant 1000 acre estate rich in history, romance, tragedy and prosperity. Built in 1868 by the prominent surgeon and politician Mitchell Henry for his beloved wife Margaret, the Baronial Castle, Neo-Gothic church and Walled Garden are imbued with the couples love of the area. After Margaret’s tragic passing the estate was sold to the Duke of Manchester.

In 1920 became the home of an order of Benedictine Nuns fleeing war torn Europe. To this day the Benedictine Nuns still call this home and have opened the gates to visitors. It is one of the most visited attractions in the west of Ireland. A visit to Kylemore not only allows one to take in the beautiful buildings, scenery and history of the estate but also contains some hidden gems. Mitchells Café serves up delicious home bakes while our craft shop sells a wide range of Irish made products. You will also find chocolates and soaps handmade by the nuns. The garden tea house is an ideal spot to take in a cup of coffee looking out on the Diamond Hill. We have all you need for the perfect Connemara day out.
